Sister Outsider is a walking group which promotes outdoor physical activity for women and girls. The program leads participants on walking trips through the south side community of South Shore. As one of the city of Chicago’s violence interruption programs, Sister Outsider builds community cohesion, promotes wellness, safety and peace.
Our program leads participants on a focused cultural historical tour through the once vibrant commercial thoroughfare of South Shore’s 75th Street. The walk spans 75th Street, from Rainbow Beach to Jeffery Blvd and back.
Each walk begins with a brief low-impact stretch led by a locally based fitness trainer followed by break outs into small socially distanced walking groups of 3-5 people.
Each group begins with a brief grounding talk by one of the hired walkers who may be a therapist or social services provider based in South Shore. Along the 2 mile round-trip trek, we celebrate the cultural history of South Shore while exploring intersections of art and social justice with a number of community members who serve as docents.
The walkers always stop at the Sisters in Cinema Media Arts Center that will open in 2021. Participants learn about Sisters in Cinema, as an organization making a long term investment in our underserved community with a new Media Arts Center at 2310 E. 75th Street.
The socially distanced walk also employs a number of community members to serve as docents. Each docent walks with a small group of participants along 75th Street sharing history and encouraging conversation and engagement between participants along the way.
