Sisters in Cinema was founded in 1997 by award-winning filmmaker and film scholar, Dr. Yvonne Welbon as an online resource for and about African American women filmmakers.
In 2003 a companion award-winning documentary on the history of African American women feature film directors was released. Sisters in Cinema was broadcast on Starz/Encore and TV One and screened in dozens of film festivals and other venues around the world.
In 2014, Sisters in Cinema was established as a non-profit in the state of Illinois with a mission to entertain, educate, develop and celebrate future generations of storytellers and their audiences. The non-profit was dormant until the spring of 2017 when Sisters in Cinema began developing an operational plan to fully launch the organization as a Media Arts Center in 2018.
